Kottayam-A History

Kottayam (in Malayalam:കോട്ടയം) is a city in the Indian state of Kerala. It is located in central Kerala and is also the administrative capital of Kottayam district. Kottayam has an estimated population of 60,725, according to the 2001 census. The town is an important trading center of spices and commercial crops, especially rubber. Major Kerala print media such as Malayala Manorama group and Deepika are headquartered in the city. Also a pioneering centre of modern education in Kerala, the city became India's first municipality to achieve 100% literacy in 1989 and the district became the first tobacco free district in India[citation needed]. The city of Kottayam is also called as "Akshara Nagari (അക്ഷര നഗരി)" which means the "City of Letters" considering its contribution to print media and literature.First Freedom Fighter Chempil Arayan Ananthapadmanabhan Valiya Arayan Kankumaran who fought at the Cochin Fort against the British Rule in 29 December 1808.Chempil Arayan was the commander in chief of Velu Thambi Dalawa.

K M Mathew

K. M. Mathew (January 2, 1917 – August 1, 2010) was a former Editor in Chief of leading Malayalam daily Malayala Manorama.

He joined the newspaper as Managing Editor in 1954 and went on to become Editor in chief in 1973.

Mathew launched many publications such as the women’s magazine Vanitha in Malayalam and Hindi, the English magazine The Week, the farmer’s magazine Karshakasree, children’s magazines Balarama, Amar Chitra Katha and Kalikudukka in Malayalam and Magic Pot in English and encyclopedic Manorama Yearbook in Malayalam, English, Hindi, Tamil and Bengali. he died recently.

Arun Thomas

He is one of the patriots in Kanjirappally Taluk, in Kottayam district. He is famous for his "namjak samaram". He is a unique personality in that in whole Kerala. He is the author, patron and foundar of the moment. He is the member of one of the notable families in Kottayam, Vattakkattu, which is a subsidiary family of Kunnumpuram.

His ways to find justice was unique, one which are not tried by any one else.

Akkamma Cherian

She was born on Feb 14 , 1909 at Kanjirappally, (then Kingdom of Travancore), present Kerala state of India as second daughter of Thomman Cherian and Annamma. She was educated at Government Girls High School Kanjirappally and St. Joseph High School, Changanassery. She graduated in B.A. History from St. Teresa's College, Ernakulam. After her formal education, she worked as a teacher at St. Mary's School, Kanjirappally, where she later became Head teacher of the school. She also did her B.L.T degree from Trivandrum Training College.
